Can we create a fairer inner world for children?

Can we create a fairer inner world for children?

That is the question that Light Lens was built upon.

We believe every child deserves a fairer inner world.

Not just some children.
Not only children with access to specialists, programmes, resources or support.
Every child.
Because every child is already making sense of who they are.

The question is whether they are given language that helps them do so with clarity and compassion.
Too many children come to believe:  "I am the problem."  "I am bad."  "I am difficult."  "I am broken."
Not because they are, but because experiences become tangled with identity.

Light Lens exists to help create separation.
To help children understand who they are, what they carry, and what their emotions and behaviours may be communicating.

We believe understanding the inner world should be able to travel - across schools, families, communities, cultures, levels of resource, across the world.

Because every child carries something.
And every child deserves to know they are more than what they carry.

A language designed travel

A language designed travel

Light Lens was intentionally designed to be accessible rather than complex.

Not because children’s inner worlds are simple, but because support for understanding them should not depend entirely on specialist systems, extensive resources or highly specific environments.

The framework was developed with a different question in mind - what might become possible if a shared language for understanding the inner world could travel more widely?

As a result, Light Lens is designed to be:
- simple enough to begin in everyday moments;
- flexible across different settings;
- adaptable across cultures and environments;
- usable without specialist training;
- and meaningful enough to stay with children over time.

It can be:
- drawn on paper;
- explored in conversation;
- integrated into existing work;
- used in reflective activities;
- and adapted across homes, classrooms, wellbeing settings and community environments.

The aim is not to replace professional support where it is needed, but to offer a practical and emotionally accessible framework that can help more children understand themselves with greater clarity and compassion.

What Light Lens is

Light Lens is a simple language for understanding the inner world.

At its heart is a visual metaphor.
- Light represents who the child is - their qualities, strengths, values, hopes, relationships and goals.
- Stones represent what the child experiences and carries - challenges, difficulties, pressure and life experiences.
- Signals represent what is noticed through emotions, behaviour and body responses when something is happening around the light or the stones.

Together, this creates a way of understanding something deeply important - who a child is is not the same as what they carry.

About the creator

Light Lens was developed by Angharad Davies, a children’s author with postgraduate qualifications in Psychology and Therapeutic Play.

Her work centres around helping children understand their inner world through simple, accessible language that can be meaningfully applied in real-life settings.

The development of Light Lens has been shaped by both professional study and lived experience.

From a young age, Angharad was deeply aware of differences in children’s lives and opportunities across the world. Later, in her early twenties, she volunteered with children and organisations in countries including Romania, Kenya, Mongolia and Mexico.

Across very different environments and circumstances, one thing remained constant:  every child was still making sense of an inner world.

Years later, becoming a mother brought that awareness into everyday life in a new way.  Questions around emotional development, identity, behaviour and self-understanding were part of daily experience and responsibility.

Around this time, Angharad returned to a metaphor first encountered during earlier studies in Therapeutic Play - the idea of light and stones as a way of understanding life experience.

As this idea continued to evolve, one observation became increasingly clear:  many approaches to emotional development and wellbeing are valuable, but not always widely accessible. They often rely on training, resources or systems that are not available in every setting.

Light Lens developed from a simple extension of that observation.

What if something simpler could travel further?
